Last Thursday saw Washington area elite gathered for the Washington Humane Society’s (WHS) 12th annual Sugar and Champagne Affair. The sold out event, led by Master of Ceremonies, 94.7 Fresh FM’s Tommy McFly, honored the individuals who work year round to help prevent animal cruelty: Washington Humane Society’s Humane Law Enforcement Officers, Animal Care & Control Officers and Humane Educators. In addition to honoring those who choose their careers in the fight against animal cruelty, WHS honored “Humane Heroes.” These heroes are members of the community who support WHS programs and have a personal commitment to supporting animal welfare in the area.
Hosted by Chef Todd Gray and Ellen Kassoff Gray, of Equinox Restaurant, Muse at the Corcoran Gallery of Art and Salamander Resort, Sugar and Champagne was a celebration of all things sweet and decadent. Local restaurants brought scrumptious desserts, such as Pie Sisters and Old Town Alexandria’s Virtue with their Nutella Cream Pie and fabulous cocktails, like Honey This Will Make You Feel Better from Arlington, VA’s TNT Bar. For those lucky enough to be VIP there were savory treats, like DC’s 1789 Restaurant’s Grappa Cured Scottish Trout with Brussels sprout salad. Some restaurants, such as DC’s The Daily Dish, even had treats for the abundance of four-legged friends who attended.
The affair, while a wonderful excuse to have fun and indulge, also kicks off the fundraising season for WHS’s Fashion for Paws. If you missed Sugar & Champagne, be sure to check out Fashion for Paws! It’s another great event to benefit the Washington Humane Society and a place to hobnob with more of Washington’s elite. Last year Marie Osmond hosted, so you never know who’ll be there. Tickets are on sale now and the models are busy raising donations to reach the $750,000 goal. Don’t miss out!
