Favorite Sports Photographs Of 2015

Last year I made a more concerted effort to photograph more sporting events, with the goal to at long last cover an NFL game and get back into the camera wells at a Washington Nationals game.

Unfortunately, I was unable to reach those goals, but I finally found myself baseline at the University of Maryland for their match-up against the University of Wisconsin, and back at a racetrack at the Red Bull Global Rallycross race at RFK Stadium.

And, of course, I joined the Washington Kastles for the fifth straight year as they once again dominated WorldTeam Tennis en route to a six championship.  Below are some of my favorite sports photos of the year.

Danielle + Michael’s Old Town Virginia Engagement Session

I met Danielle back in September at the Washington Wedding Experience and was so happy to receive a call from her a short time later about photographing her wedding next October. Before we get there an engagement session/save the date card shoot was in order. Danielle decided on Old Town Alexandria for the session, which is easily one of the best places to shoot regardless of the time of year, or session involved.

Danielle’s ring, as you can plainly see, is one of the most amazing rings I’ve seen so far. I could photograph this thing for days, and thankfully will get a chance to spend more time with this in front of my lens come October 15th.

After a stop at my favorite yellow wall, and this gorgeous blue door I discovered, Danielle and Michael opted for a quick outfit change before we headed back out to explore some of the side streets, alleyways and the ever popular Wilkes Street tunnel. With our session coming to an end I took the happy couple to Pop’s Ice Cream for an after shoot treat, because who doesn’t love ice cream in November?

A Review Of Lucky Camera Straps’ Wrist Strap

A few months ago I came across a camera strap company on Instagram by the name of Lucky Camera Straps. I currently use a Black Rapid for most of my work so I wasn’t necessarily in the market for a new strap but I wouldn’t mind having something to replace the generic ones that came with my cameras.

One thing I’ve always wanted to get is a hand for my portrait sessions, or any other type of shoot that doesn’t require a full on camera strap.

Lucky Camera Straps caught my attention not only because they offered some beautiful-looking leather straps, but they had a really nice looking wrist strap so I went ahead and ordered one.

When the strap arrived, from Australia, I was immediately impressed with the quality of the strap. Lucky Straps has clearly taken the time and research to find some of the most comfortable leather around and truly do make a beautiful camera strap. I was in love with this thing and could see myself using this more often than not.  Then I put it on my camera.

Cool camera straps, I think it would wear on my wrist too much. I need as much weight dropping on my hips and legs. Does it make your wrist hurt?

Rich - December 31, 2015 - 12:07 pm

Carly, it actually doesn’t hurt at all. The D4s with a 24-70mm is a pretty hefty beast, but the strap really didn’t seem to pull, or dig into my skin too much. It actually hurt a little more when I wore it up around my forearm. Like I said, I love the strap, it’s comfortable and well made, I just wish I bought a larger one instead of the wrist strap. You’re welcome to test it out if you want.

Abby + Adam’s Inner Harbor Wedding

Back in March, Abby and Adam tied the knot at the Royal Sonesta in Baltimore. I’ve known Abby for years and she is one of my favorite people, so it was truly an honor to capture her wedding day.

After catching a few hours of sleep from a wedding the night before I headed up to Baltimore for the wedding. Thankfully, I was able to avoid any marathon traffic that was going on and got to the hotel early enough to check out the ceremony and reception rooms.

The Royal Sonesta had finished with their renovations and the rooms were setup perfectly for their first wedding since renovations were finished.abby + adam march 29 2015 (16 of 622)

We started out our day with a first look on Federal Hill, headed down to the Inner Harbor for some shots on a carousel and some sort of weird, tiny police car thing, before heading back inside so Abby and Adam could tie the knot, break a glass, dance the Horah and throw one of the best parties of 2015 so far. BadWolf Brewing’s Portrait Session

Last year I approached the owner of a local brewery about doing a portrait session with him at their location.

Unfortunately we were never able to connect on setting the shoot up at the time. It actually turned out to be a blessing in disguise as I was just starting out with portrait work, their location was rather cramped and I wouldn’t be able to effectively capture the look I was going for.

As time went on, BadWolf Brewery opened a second (and larger) location and I was able to spend the last year fine-tuning my ability to actually take a decent portrait of someone.A snap from BadWolf Brewing
